Fed: 'Thousands' wait in Indonesia to cross border: Debus
Home Affairs Minister BOB DEBUSs warns thousands of asylum seekers are waiting in Indonesia
to try and enter Australia illegally.
Mr DEBUS has told the ABC's Lateline program he has no specific figures .. but international
intelligence suggests trouble in Sri Lanka .. Afghanistan and Pakistan has led to a sharp
increase in asylum seekers.
He says Indonesian police .. often working in association with Australian authorities
.. have managed to interrupt a great many attempts at people smuggling.
Mr DEBUS has again refused to give details on the events surrounding the fatal asylum-seeker
boat explosion at Ashmore Reef.
He's called for an end to speculation on the disaster until Northern Territory police
complete their forensic reconstruction of events.
