Chavez rejects US accusations against Venezuelans

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on Friday condemned as laughable a U.S. government decision to blacklist four of his allies for allegedly aiding Colombian rebels.

He challenged Washington to present proof and said he is starting his own "Chavez list" of international rogues that would include some U.S. lawmakers and NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

The U.S. Treasury Department on Thursday accused a Venezuelan general, an intelligence official and two other political allies of Chavez of providing arms, security and training to Colombia's main rebel group.

"The list the Treasury Department has released ... is something to laugh at," …

Sectarian killing spree kills 30 in Syria

BEIRUT (AP) — The discovery of three corpses with their eyes gouged out set off a sectarian killing spree that left 30 people dead in a chilling sign that the Syrian revolt against President Bashar Assad is enflaming long-simmering religious tensions.

The opposition accused the president's minority Alawite regime of trying to stir up trouble among the Sunni majority to blunt the growing enthusiasm for the four-month-old uprising. The protesters have been careful to portray their movement as free of any sectarian overtones.

The killings over the weekend in the central city of Homs "undermine the peaceful nature of the revolution and serve its enemies who want to turn it into a …

Ga. pastor, father-to-be killed in drug sting

Plainclothes officers shot and killed a small-town pastor when the 28-year-old father-to-be resisted efforts to question him about a passenger in his car who was the target of a drug sting, authorities said.

Jonathan Paul Ayers of Shoal Creek Baptist Church in Lavonia wasn't targeted in the probe that ended in gunfire at a gas station Tuesday, Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokesman John Bankhead said. But drug task-force agents opened fire on him after he tried to avoid them, putting his car in reverse and striking one of the officers.

Bankhead said agents approached Ayers after he dropped a woman off at a store in downtown Toccoa, which is about 90 miles …

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel's battered opposition Labor Party has turned to an outspoken female journalist to revive its fortunes, bringing a fresh face to the Israeli political stage.

Shelly Yacimovich, 51, was declared the winner of the centrist party's leadership primary after a runoff late Wednesday, garnering 54 percent of the vote compared to 45 percent support for her rival and one-time political mentor Amir Peretz, a former party leader who also served as defense minister. Spears faces 2 more weeks in psychiatric care

LOS ANGELES - Britney Spears' stay in a psychiatric ward wasextended for two weeks under a section in state law that allowspatients to be kept for medical treatment if they are found to begravely disabled or a danger to themselves or others, a person closeto the pop star told The Associated Press.

Spears was to be released Sunday from UCLA Medical Center'spsychiatric ward after undergoing a 72-hour mental evaluation.

But doctors and a ward medical officer cited California law tokeep her longer, said the person close to Spears, who requestedanonymity.

Spears' detainment made it unlikely she would appear at ascheduled Monday morning hearing over custody of her children, 1-year-old Jayden James and 2-year-old Sean Preston.

Spears, 26, lost custody of the boys to ex-husband KevinFederline following an incident last month when she refused toreturn the children after a visit.

GOP pitches transportation bill as jobs program

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republicans are pitching a six-year transportation construction plan as a major jobs bill that can win bipartisan approval before next year's election.

Rep. John Mica, chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, said Monday the most significant obstacle to passing the bill was eliminated when GOP leaders recently agreed to keep spending on highway programs at current levels even though gas tax revenues are declining. The bill would serve as the House's major alternative to President Barack Obama's jobs plan.

Fuel taxes have historically been used to pay for transportation programs.

Mica said the bill would spend about $285 billion, but would spur far greater investment in roads, bridges, and transit systems through federal loans and loan guarantees.

Va. voters decide Democratic nominee for governor

Turnout was light Tuesday as voters chose a Democratic nominee for governor in Virginia's primary.

The primary marks the first bid for elective office for former Democratic National Committee chairman Terry McAuliffe, who led Hillary Clinton's 2008 White House run. He faces state Sen. R. Creigh Deeds and former Democratic legislative leader Brian J. Moran.

In the fall, the winner will face former attorney general Bob McDonnell, the well-funded nominee for a Republican party desperate to overcome crushing losses in the 2008 election. McDonnell, a conservative with strong ties to religious broadcaster Pat Robertson, faced no opponent for the GOP nomination.

Voters will also select a Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor, and Democratic nominees in nine House of Delegates races. There are GOP primaries for three House seats.

Local election officials, professionals in the three campaigns and political scientists say the turnout is likely to be 5 percent or less of the state's 5 million registered voters.

Officials said turnout was heavier in some parts of the Washington, D.C., suburbs. In Arlington, for instance, about 10 percent of voters cast ballots, drawn by a House of Delegates race. State Board of Elections Secretary Nancy Rodrigues said other turnout ranged from 4 percent in Richmond to 2 percent in the rural southwest.

McAuliffe's political connections from his days working for President Bill Clinton helped him dominate press coverage and amass a hefty amount of cash. He seized on the down economy by promising to bring jobs to Virginia, touring the state with his confidante Bill Clinton. However, that left the venture capitalist open to attacks over his involvement in a telecommunications firm that made him millions before the company went bust, leaving 10,000 people jobless and costing investors $54 billion.

Moran, from Alexandria, went further to the left than his rivals in appealing to liberal activists. He pledged to oppose new coal-fired power initiatives and reverse the state's same-sex marriage ban.

Deeds, the only Democrat not from the Washington, D.C., suburbs, hewed toward the middle. He drew fire late from primary rivals for legislative votes supporting Virginia's broad, pro-gun laws, actions popular in rural areas that don't play well in cities and affluent suburbs.

Gov. Timothy M. Kaine, the new Democratic National Committee chairman, is barred by the state Constitution from seeking re-election.

Wal-Mart Predicts Slim Dec. Sales Gain

NEW YORK - Wal-Mart Stores Inc. issued a sobering warning for the holiday shopping season Thursday, predicting its December same-store sales gain would be no better than 1 percent.

The news, coupled with Wal-Mart's expected announcement that it suffered its first same-store decline in more than 10 years during November, came as the nation's retailers reported an overall mixed sales performance for the month. Same-store sales reflect business at stores open at least a year and are the industry standard for measuring a retailer's strength.

Wal-Mart's disappointment was a sharp contrast with results from Target Corp., which beat Wall Street forecasts, and Federated Department Stores Inc., which far exceeded expectations.

Other retailers had mixed sales. J.C. Penney Co. and Costco Wholesale Corp. both fell short of Wall Street projections.

The timing of Wal-Mart's news couldn't have been worse for the world's largest retailer, coming at the start of the holiday shopping season. While many retailers had a strong Thanksgiving weekend, Wal-Mart had warned Saturday that its November sales would be weaker than expected.

Wal-Mart reported a 0.1 percent dip in same-store sales. Including a drop in gasoline revenues from its Sam's Club division, which Wal-Mart did not include in its calculation, same store-sales fell 0.3 percent.

Wal-Mart has struggled in recent months on a mix of problems, including the fact that its lower-income customers were hurt by soaring gas prices. But the company's lackluster sales have persisted even as the cost of gas eased, an indication that shoppers are turning away from merchandise like apparel, and sticking with basics like food and consumer products.

"This is pretty discouraging," said Ken Perkins, president of RetailMetrics LLC, a research company in Swampscott, Mass. But he added that Wal-Mart's weak sales will not be a harbinger of a broad based weakness across the retail sector."

Wal-Mart's discount stores suffered a 0.5 percent decline, while Sam's Clubs had a 2.0 percent increase.

One of the company's problems has been its inability to understand what its customers are looking for. It filled its clothing racks with too many trendy items like skinny jeans that shoppers just didn't want.

Despite Wal-Mart's problems, many other retailers do have hopes for a strong season. Sales during the Thanksgiving weekend rose a respectable 2.8 percent, according to the research firm ShopperTrak RCT Corp.

Still, there are concerns about how confident consumers are going into the season. The latest measure of confidence by the Conference Board fell during November, and reports of job cuts and buyouts at companies including Pfizer Inc. and Ford Motor Co. could make consumers even more uneasy.

Discounter Target said same-store sales rose 5.9 percent, topping forecasts of a 5.7 percent gain, as consumers bought electronics and health care and conusmer products

Federated said same-store sales rose 8.5 percent in November, exceeding its own forecast and surpassing Wall Street's 4.8 percent projection. It also raised its December sales forecast.

Penney said same-store sales rose 1.4 percent, helped by strong sales of jewelry, children's goods and home products. But the results fell short of the 3.7 percent forecast of analysts polled by Thomson Financial.

Costco Wholesale Corp. reported a 5 percent gain in same-store sales, below the 5.7 percent estimate.

Nordstrom Inc. had a 5.4 percent gain in same-store sales, matching Wall Street expectations.

Limited Brands Inc. had a 12 percent increase in same-store sales, exceeding the 7.8 percent estimate.

Teen retailers generally did well. Wet Seal Inc. had a 5.5 percent same-store gain, beating the 4.0 percent estimate. But Bebe Stores' 5.8 percent gain fell below the 7.9 percent estimate from Wall Street.

American Eagle Outfitters Inc. said Wednesday its same-store sales rose 14 percent in November from year-ago levels, boosted by a strong start to the holiday shopping season. The results were in line with Wall Street's estimate for a 14.8 percent gain.

Police: Bus, truck collision kills 23 in India

Police say an overcrowded bus has collided head-on into a truck along a sharp curve on a highway in eastern India, killing 23 people and injuring 15 others.

Police officer Amit Jain says the bus driver apparently lost control of the vehicle in the accident Saturday near Dhannarua, a village in Bihar state.

He says all of the injured have been hospitalized.

Jain says some passengers were riding on the roof of the packed bus.

Road accidents occur frequently in India and are often blamed on reckless driving, aging vehicles and overloading.

Pakistani PM ignores US warning on Iran gas deal

Defying a warning from Washington, Pakistan's prime minister promised to go ahead with a plan to import natural gas from Iran, even if the U.S. levies additional sanctions against the Mideast country.

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani's comments Tuesday came two days after the U.S. special envoy to Pakistan, Richard Holbrooke, cautioned Pakistan not to "overcommit" itself to the deal because it could run afoul of new sanctions against Iran being finalized by Congress.

The deal has been a constant source of tension between the two countries, with Pakistan arguing it is vital to its ability to cope with an energy crisis, and the U.S. stressing it would undercut international pressure on Iran over its nuclear program.

Gilani said Pakistan would reconsider the deal if it violated U.N. sanctions, but the country was "not bound to follow" unilateral U.S. measures. He said media reports that quoted him as saying Pakistan would heed Holbrooke's warning were incorrect.

The U.N. has levied four sets of sanctions against Iran for failing to suspend uranium enrichment, a process that can produce fuel for a nuclear weapon. The latest set of U.N. sanctions was approved earlier this month.

The U.S. has also applied a number of unilateral sanctions against Iran, and Congress is finalizing a new set largely aimed at the country's petroleum industry. Both houses have passed versions of the sanctions and are working to reconcile their differences.

Pakistan and Iran finalized the gas deal earlier this month. Under the contract, Iran will export 760 million cubic feet (21.5 million cubic meters) of gas per day to Pakistan through a new pipeline beginning in 2014. The construction of the pipeline is estimated to cost some $7 billion.

While U.S. officials have expressed opposition to the deal, Washington acknowledges that Pakistan faces a severe energy crisis and has made aid to the energy sector one if its top development priorities. Electricity shortages in Pakistan cause rolling blackouts that affect businesses and intensify suffering during the hot summer months.

U.S. opposition to the gas deal has also been tempered by Washington's reliance on Pakistani cooperation to fight al-Qaida and Taliban militants staging attacks against NATO troops in Afghanistan.

The Pakistani military is also engaged in fierce battles with Taliban fighters along the Afghan border who have declared war against the state.

Pakistani troops backed by fighter jets killed 43 militants and wounded two dozen others in the Orakzai tribal region Tuesday, said Jahanzeb Khan, the deputy political administrator in the area.

Four soldiers were killed in the fighting and 18 others were wounded, said Khan.

EU to push Asian counterparts on Myanmar

China, India and other Asian countries should press Myanmar's military leaders to drop charges against pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and release her from house arrest, EU foreign ministers said Monday.

British Foreign Secretary David Miliband said there was an agreement at a meeting of the ministers here that the EU pursue fresh contacts with Myanmar's Asian neighbors at talks in Vietnam next week.

"It is right the EU put on the table all the potential ways of exercising influence including engagement and including sanctions, both of which will be undertaken with real vigor," Miliband told reporters.

The ministers discussed increasing sanctions against Myanmar's junta, to help restore democracy in the Southeast Asian country, but failed to agree on new measures.

Instead they will focus on putting pressure on countries like China, India and Thailand who could exert influence over Myanmar to change its ways.

Suu Kyi, one of Myanmar's more than 2,100 political prisoners, is on trial in Yangon for allegedly harboring an American man who swam to her lakeside home where she was under house arrest.

French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner in Paris called the trial a "scandalous provocation."

Miliband and other ministers said the EU was concerned about the trial and efforts by the military junta to shove through "sham" constitutional reforms.

"The house arrest of Aung San Suu Kyi is bad enough, but for her to be put on a show trial just adds to her pain," he said in Brussels. Suu Kyi has spent more than 13 of the last 19 years under detention.

EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana led the call for more sanctions, though others questioned whether existing EU punitive measures were working, including a travel ban on Myanmar's political officials, an arms embargo and a freeze of assets in Europe.

"We have seen the sanctions have not helped. They have not brought anything new," EU External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner said.

Sweden's Carl Bildt said EU nations would pressure their counterparts from the 10-country Association of Southeast Asian Nations, which includes Myanmar, when they meet next week in Hanoi, Vietnam. Past efforts to cajole the Asian group to denounce Myanmar have failed.

Myanmar, also known as Burma, has been ruled by its military since 1962. The current junta came to power in 1988 after crushing a pro-democracy uprising, and has stepped up its campaign against opposition politicians and activists before elections planned for next year.

The EU imposed sanctions in 2006 to protest the junta's crackdown on pro-democracy groups, and added other economic sanctions in 2007, including a ban on imports of timber, gemstones and precious metals.

AZ to release immigration training plan for cops

Arizona officials plan to release a training program Thursday designed to teach police officers to enforce a tough new crackdown on illegal immigration without racially profiling.

An hour-long video and supporting paperwork will be sent to all 170 Arizona police agencies and publicly released Thursday morning.

Officials released an outline for the video in May.

It will emphasize the importance of professionalism, ethics and integrity, as well as an officer's duty to protect civil rights, according to the outline.

Retired immigration agents also will describe how federal officers are trained to avoid racial profiling and the documents that immigrants are required to carry.

And officers will be taught how to contact federal immigration authorities or local officers certified by the federal government to determine someone's immigration status.

Gov. Jan Brewer ordered the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board to develop the training when she signed the law April 23.

Police bosses will decide the best way to teach their forces. But there is no requirement that all 15,000 Arizona police officers complete the training before the law takes effect July 29.

Opponents have challenged the measure as unconstitutional and have asked that a federal court block it from taking effect. U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton plans to hear arguments on the request later this month.

Arizona's law generally requires police officers enforcing another law to question a person's immigration status if there's a reasonable suspicion that the person is in the country illegally.

It restricts the use of race, color or national origin as the basis for triggering immigration questions. But civil rights groups and some police officials argue that officers will still assume that illegal immigrants look Hispanic.

Arizona's law was passed in part with the lobbying muscle of unions representing rank-and-file police officers who argued that they should be allowed to arrest illegal immigrants they come across.

It was opposed by police bosses who worried it would be expensive to implement and would destroy the trust they've developed in Hispanic neighborhoods.

PIZZALCHIK

I entered Pizzalchik's small space around 11 a.m. and an eager, smiling man behind the counter asked if he could give me "the tour," so to speak. He proceeded to tell me about a multitude of fresh ingredients, including homemade salad dressings and vegetables and meats roasted/smoked/pickled in-house. From the focaccia bread to the "afterthought du jour" (dessert), almost everything on the menu is as fresh and original as it comes, and there's a syllable for every taste.

I decided on a 10-inch hand-tossed pizza with elk sausage, rainbow peppers and an assortment of wild mushrooms cooked in wine reduction and cream. My helpful tour guide, who I assumed was the owner, arranged my toppings with an expert's eye as he gave the "tour" to another customer. As I waited, the aroma of bubbling mozzarella and provolone got me salivating, and when my pizza popped out of the giant oven, it looked like a piece of art. Thin ovals of sausage spiked with fennel seeds mingled with juicy peppers and the grays, browns and duns of wild mushrooms (including a few morels thrown on for good measure). It smelled heavenly. I ordered a side of rosemary roasters (wedges of Yukon Gold potatoes roasted with rosemary) and laughed as the owner related the story of a now-regular customer who once assumed that Pizzalchik was Vietnamese.

In the comfort of my living room, I dipped a roaster in an unnamed orange sauce. The potato was tender and meaty with pleasingly crisp edges and a wonderful bouquet of herbs with just a hint of olive oil. The sauce was the best goddamn fry sauce I've ever tasted. I don't know exactly how he makes it, but that Pizzalchik can dress my potatoes any time. The pizza had a lovely golden crust, not too thin, not too thick, and the toppings were more than generous. The morels in particular were like juicy little treasures, every porous inch popping with flavor, but I found the rest of the mushrooms bland in comparison. The cheese was heady and mixed well with the sweetness of the peppers and the bite of the sausage. The overall effect left me quite satisfied.

What did I learn? Names can be deceiving and there are still restaurateurs out there willing to give you the spiel and a handful of free mushrooms, even when you're not a food critic.

--Erin Ryan thought Pizzalchik was a Russian satellite.

When asked to review Pizzalchik, I was hesitant. I couldn't get past the name, which stands for PIZZa, sALad and CHIcKen. I'm nothing if not dedicated to my job, though, so I rounded up the Beast (my 4-year old niece), the Skater (one of my two teenaged nephews) and my sister-in-law, the Schoolteacher. We went to experience Pizzalchik for better or worse.

There were only three tables and a couple of barstools making up all Pizzalchik's indoor seating, making for a cozy dining experience.

There wasn't room for any more seating or there wouldn't be room for the GIANT 6,000-pound hearth oven, in which everything is cooked. Even the Beast was quiet for once as she stared into its flaming maw. Owner/chef Brad Breakell greeted us and proudly described the freshness of pizza toppings like pepperoni, shrimp, smoked turkey, capers, zucchini, cashews, and oh so much more, all lovingly arranged on a hand-spun thin crust. He detailed the garlic, mushrooms and seasonings that go into the roasted chicken, talked about the freshness of the salad ingredients and showed us a display of beautiful cheesecake.

We selected pepperoni pizza for the Beast, one with mushrooms, sun dried tomatoes and house-marinated artichoke hearts to share, a shrimp on cold Asian noodles salad for me, tossed green salad for the Schoolteacher and a quarter chicken and Caesar salad for the Skater. We did have to wait awhile because everything was cooked to order, but once the food arrived, I was in a kind of taste bud euphoria. The dressing on my salad was tangy and a perfect complement to the noodles and big, skewered shrimp. The pizza was crispy and every ingredient was ideally balanced against the next. The Skater reluctantly let me taste his chicken and it was so tender we almost fought over the juicy remains. The Schoolteacher's salad had kiwi, cucumber, marinated onion and a gorgeous edible flower.

While not inexpensive, the food was worth every brand-new buffalo nickel they charge. On the way home, the Schoolteacher and I compared notes on everyone we were going to tell about Pizzalchik. With all of that delicious, fresh food, the Breakells can name the place any damn thing they want. I will go back. And I suggest you get yourself there, too. I've already made a lot of phone calls.

Imprisoned activist's daughter freed in Bahrain

MANAMA, Bahrain (AP) — A daughter of a prominent Bahraini activist has been freed after five days in custody. She was detained last week during an anti-government demonstration in the Gulf kingdom.

The 28-year-old Zainab al-Khawaja, herself an activist and a well-known blogger, was released late Tuesday.

She is a daughter of Bahrain's most prominent political activist, Abdulhadi al-Khawaja. He was imprisoned for life along with seven other opposition leaders in June. A special security tribunal, set up under emergency rule, convicted them of anti-state crimes.

Along with her father, al-Khawaja's three other male relatives and her husband have been imprisoned since February, when the uprising of Bahrain's Shiite majority against Sunni rulers started.

Whittier St. residents reunited for weekend

Whittier St. residents reunited for weekend

Mattapan resident Marlon Williams is a son of Lower Roxbury. He grew up on Ruggles Street in the 1950s and '60s.

But when he met Donna Delaney in the Whittier Street housing project, his history became entwined in that of the development. On the basketball court in the center of the project and on the benches lining the playground, the two courted to the tunes of the Temptations, the Isley Brothers and James Brown.

Much has changed since those days. Williams and Delaney broke up and went their separate ways. Williams' home on Ruggles Street was demolished, as was virtually every other building in the surrounding Lower Roxbury community in the bad old days of urban renewal.

The entire neighborhood was razed to make way for three major construction projects -- the extension of Interstate 95, a planned Inner Belt highway and a campus high school -- projects that never fully materialized, largely due to the activism of Whittier Street tenants like state Rep. Gloria Fox.

Fast forward to 1996, a 50th birthday party of a mutual friend. Williams and Delaney caught each others' eyes.

"We were on the dance floor," Delaney says.

The old love was re-kindled and now the two are an item once again. And last Saturday, along with hundreds of former Whittier Street residents, the pair returned to the courtyard where so many Lower Roxbury residents formed fond childhood memories.

"We used to go swimming in the Cabot Street gym," Williams said, pointing in the direction of the long-demolished building. "We used to go to the store over there when we got through swimming."

Past and present Whittier Street residents enjoyed three days of reminiscing and re-connecting last weekend including a gala night, a cook-out in the courtyard and a gospel concert.

Past residents including luminaries Fox, singer Bobby Taylor and former judge Rudy Pierce turned out for the event.

"We've had doctors, judges who came out of my generation," said Vikki Middleton who moved into the development when it was built in 1952 with her parents and five sisters.

"It was a real community," said former resident Florence Hagins, who works with the Massachusetts Affordable Housing Alliance. "Everybody was friendly. I could tell you every family that lived in every unit. It was that close."

One family was the Samzis, one of a handful of white families living in the development from the '50s through the '70s. Rick Samzi, who lived in the development from '52 until '73 said the feeling of family was all-inclusive.

"Back then it was a big family," he commented. "Everybody socialized from family to family, from street to street."

Samzi recalls basketball games and rivalries with residents of other developments like Mission Main and Alice Taylor.

"Back in those days people were tough, but they had respect for elders and for women," he said. "We had rivalries against Mission Hill. We had fights on occasion. But we were all friendly. Those were good days. You miss them."

For Gloria Fox, living in Whittier Street gave her an introduction into community activism. Fox became active in the fight to stop the state's planned extension of Interstate 95 through the center of the city along what is now the Southwest Corridor. Fox joined the Whittier Street Tenants Association -- the first housing project tenant association anywhere in the country -- under the direction of her mentor Pat Raynor.

"I ran the housing services agency here until I ran for public office," Fox said.

Now that the highway project has been defeated, Fox has turned her activism to fighting for improvements inside the development. While former and current residents at the reunion fondly recalled the playground and basketball courts that once occupied the center courtyard of the development, the courtyard is now under reconstruction.

Fox says the area also needs a new teen center to replace the old Cabot Street gym.

"We don't just want to bring it back, we want to do it better," she said. "It's a bi-lingual community now. The services have to be delivered in a different way. It's going to take more funding."

Fox urged Whittier Street residents to pressure the Boston Housing Authority to allocate more funds for the renovation of the development.

BHA Director Sandra Henriquez says the agency has been working with the Whittier Street Tenants Association on the redevelopment of the playground. So far, the courtyard has been re-surfaced and landscaping and plantings have been added.

BHA officials have worked with the Task Force to raise $10,000 of the $60,000 that will be needed to construct a new playground, according to Henriquez.

"We tried to repair the courtyard with the residents in mind, but also with the reunion in mind," she said. "Things are coming back, but it will take time."

Henriquez said Fox and other past residents should work with the current resident association on their renovation efforts.

Eurozone unemployment ends 2011 at record high

LONDON (AP) — Unemployment across the 17 countries that use the euro ended 2011 at a record high, official figures showed Tuesday, a day after EU leaders acknowledged they would have to boost economic growth with the same urgency that they had shown in combating their nations' debts.

Eurostat, the EU's statistics office, said the 10.4 per cent unemployment rate in December was unchanged at its highest level since the euro was launched in 1999, as November's was revised upward from a previous estimate of 10.3 percent. Unemployment has been steadily rising over the past year — in December 2010, it stood at 10 percent — largely because of Europe's debt crisis.

University of Florida Engineers: Wireless Charger Provides Efficient Cord-Free Charging.

Byline: University of Florida

GAINESVILLE, Fla., Dec. 15 (AScribe Newswire) -- Good news about that annoying jumble of electronic device charger power cords -- it may soon be history.

University of Florida engineering researchers have built and successfully tested a pad that can charge cell phones, PDAs, laptops and other electronic devices via wireless technology. Rather than plug in the electronics to different cords and outlets, users simply place them anywhere atop the flat, thin pad, where they begin charging automatically.

The researchers are not the first to design a wireless charging device -- in fact, at least four small companies, including one based around the UF research -- are competing to bring a charger to market. …
