SHAQ COMES BACK FOR LSU DIPLOMA.(SPORTS)

Byline: Combined wire services

BATON ROUGE, La. -- Eight years and millions of dollars after he played his last college game, Shaq was back as the big man on campus, this time strolling to the sound of ``Pomp and Circumstance.''

Shaquille O'Neal donned an extra large cap and gown and received his bachelor of arts degree Friday from LSU, fulfilling a promise he made to his coach, his family and himself.

``I feel very secure,'' said the 7-foot-1, 320-pound political science major, who was excused from Friday's NBA game. ``I can get a real job now.''

Tonight, O'Neal joins LSU grads Bob Pettit and Pete Maravich as the only LSU basketball players to have their numbers retired. Mavericks: Don Nelson was back coaching the Dallas Mavericks on Friday night, after missing three games while consulting with doctors on how to treat his prostate cancer.

Nelson, also the team's general manager, said before the game against the Philadelphia 76ers that he will have surgery Jan. 4, and rejoin the Mavericks after missing 6-to-8 weeks. Hawks: Guard Jim Jackson was put on the injured list Friday by the Atlanta Hawks because of a sprained right knee.

Jackson, who missed eight games through Dec. 9, re-injured the knee Wednesday at Detroit. He has averaged 16.1 points and will be replaced by forward Roshown McLeod. Nets: Vladimir Stepania, a 7-footer who spent the last two seasons with Seattle, was signed by the New Jersey Nets on Friday.

To make room for him, guard Kevin Ollie was waived. Cavaliers: Placed center Chris Mihm on the injured list with a sprained right ankle and activated forward J.R. Reid, the team said.

Mihm has averaged 4.4 points and 1.7 rebounds a game. Bulls: Activated guard Bryce Drew and placed rookie center Jake Voskuhl on the injured list Friday.

Timberwolves: Placed swingman Todd Day on the injured list with a hyperextended left knee.
