SA: Ford to provide scholarships for female engineers

Local car producer Ford Australia has established an undergraduate scholarship program
to encourage more women to take up engineering.

The company says it'll provide five scholarships each year -- one each in five participating
universities -- with each worth $8,000 a year for up to four years.

Eligible applicants must be female Australian citizens or permanent residents planning
to begin engineering studies in 2001.

The five participating universities are the University of Queensland, RMIT University,
the University of Sydney, Deakin University and the University of Melbourne.

Ford Motor Company president JAC (JAC) NASSER says Ford Australia is keen to develop
the role of women in engineering.

He says the scholarships will provide the company with the chance to actively support
women in the vehicle industry.
