Community bank competes using check imaging system. (Western Bank of Coos Bay, OR)

Western Bank, Coos Bay, Ore., is experiencing a growth spurt. The bank has grown since the early 1970s, largely through mergers, acquisitions and establishing new branches. The $850 million-asset bank grew between 15 percent and 20 percent every year in the 1990s and projects a similar growth rate for the coming years.

This rapid growth presents at least two significant challenges, however. One is managing the increased item processing volume the bank's back office requires. Another is strengthening the bank's ability to provide personal service in small communities and compete with national banks in the region.
