Vic: Al-Qaeda lieutenant contacted Australians

MELBOURNE, Aug 1 AAP - An al-Qaeda lieutenant linked to a September 11 hijacker reportedlytelephoned Australian contacts before last year's attacks on the World Trade Center.

According to a report in today's Herald Sun, Abu Dahdah, a Syrian in US custody inSpain, telephoned people in Australia between 1996 and September 11 last year.

His details were reportedly found in the diary of a subordinate of Mohammed Atta, whoflew the first American Airlines plane into the World Trade Centre.

The Herald Sun said Attorney-General Daryl Williams' office confirmed ASIO was awareof Dahdah's Australian connections, but would not release details about what investigationshad been conducted.

The paper also said the US State Department had listed Australia as a known countrywhere al-Qaeda has operated.
